Detection capability
The metal detector must be certified for use at European airports by an EU civil aviation authority (e.g. STAC – Service technique de l’ aviation civil).
The metal detector must comply with the 2003 U.S. fully comply with the standard NIJ-0601.02 introduced by the Ministry of Justice, which replaces the NILECJ-STD-0601.00 standard in 1974. This standard defines 3 different security levels:
- Large objects (handguns)
- Medium objects (knives) and
- Small objects (small hard-to-find objects such as handcuff keys).
NIJ-0601.02 defines the requirements for detection sensitivity, discrimination, and environmental immunity. An excerpt of the details is described below (indication of the reference paragraphs in the original language):
Detection
Par. 2.3 - DETECTION PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS
Par. 2.3.1 - DETECTION SENSITIVITY: The walk-through Metal Detector must provide an alarm indication for each test sample specified by the standard (LO – Large Object Size, MO – Medium Object Size, SO – Small Object Size)
Discrimination
Par. 2.3.4 - DISCRIMINATION: For each level of security the Metal Detector must discriminate the metal objects described in the standard
The detection capability of the WTMD must be stable without fluctuations. Periodic recalibration is not necessary.
The sensitivity of the WTMD must be adjustable in order to be able to detect the largest possible number of dangerous objects.
Technical specifications
Dimensions / Weight
The minimum passage width of the WTMD must be at least 710 mm and the minimum passage height at least 2010 mm.
The external dimensions of the WTMD must be less than 880 x 2300 mm (width x height).
Mechanical properties
The design of the WTMD must be maximally optimized against wear. The structure of the WTMD must be very robust to ensure maximum protection against damage.
The structure of the WTMD must be modular and chosen in such a way that the number of existing components is reduced to a minimum in order to reduce possible sources of error.
The structure of the WTMD must be chosen so that it can be set up and dismantled quickly. The maximum setup time for the entire WTMD must not be longer than 10 minutes.
The WTMD must be a standalone device with smooth, robust and washable surfaces.
The WTMD must have additional protection in the floor area against damage from impacts, cleaning machines, splash water and other substances such as cleaning agents.
The entire control unit must be installed on the upper crossbar.
The WTMD must be able to be anchored to the ground at four points, if possible.
An anti-vandalism protection set (option) for critical installation locations (e.g. vandalism-prone, unguarded areas or prisons) must be offered as an option. The anti-vandalism protection set must offer a very high level of tamper protection in the form of a protective metal housing for the control unit. All cable connectors must be secured with screwed covers, which can only be removed using appropriate tools.
Electrical Properties
The WTMD must be able to withstand as much external electrical and mechanical interference as possible to ensure easy installation in all environments
The WTMD must be equipped with a self-diagnosis system which, through immediate signaling, indicates errors or performance fluctuations during start-up and also during ongoing operation.
The WTMD must be equipped with at least 2 photocells for a fully automatic, high-precision bidirectional counter (number of people entering and leaving) and for a statistical analysis of passages and alarms.
For security reasons, the WTMD must always be active. The use of photocells (IR sensors) to prevent WTMD alarms that occur due to nearby moving materials or external electrical interference is not permitted.
The maximum power consumption of the WTMD must not be more than 40VA (watts).
Ergonomics - Visual and acoustic indicators
The WTMD must be equipped with four light strips to indicate the metal mass found, two at the entrance and two at the exit (each on the left and right side), which can be easily seen in all daylight conditions.
There should be at least 20 different vertical indication zones (with a smooth transition) for the best possible localization of the metallic object.
The four multi-zone indicator bars must be independently programmable as a STOP + GO indicator and/or an LED position indicator to improve operation and visibility of the indicators and to ensure easy installation.
It must be possible to operate the WTMD in both directions. The Stop + Go display and/or position display must be able to be activated simultaneously, on both sides of the archway.
The WTMD control unit must be equipped with a visual alarm that can be clearly seen from at least 5 m. The visual display must use graphene, which displays proportionally to the size of the metal mass passed through. Signals below the alarm threshold must be displayed in green and signals above the alarm threshold in red.
The WTMD must be equipped with an audio alarm whose duration, tone and volume can be adjusted.
The WTMD must provide the operator with appropriate acoustic and visual signals during the start-up phase and during operation.
The WTMD must display the current security level at start-up.
The WTMD must have an automatic daily verification procedure, which can be activated with a chip card. The test result should be shown on the control unit display.
Programming and connectivity
The WTMD must have 6 different programming options:
Chip card
Control unit keyboard
Programming via RS232 port and laptop
Infrared (IR) Remote Control (Password Protected)
Bluetooth
Optionally, the WTMD should be able to be equipped with a network module for statistical data acquisition (real-time transit counters and display of alarms) and monitoring of the WTMD (status reports, etc.).
The network module should have a data logger, real-time clock, integrated web server and statistical transit data analysis.
The data transmitted by the network module should be sent using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) (FIPS PUB 197) and should not be visible to third parties.
The remote management and monitoring of the WTMD uses the Ethernet connection via TCP-IP protocol and should not require any special software.
The choice of security level should be made extremely quickly with the appropriate chip card.
The WTMD programming access should be protected by a mechanical lock and an alphanumeric password of at least 6 characters. The WTMD should have at least two levels of programming (User and Super User), each protected by its own password.
The system must be designed in such a way that it can be installed and configured in the shortest possible time: A “one touch self installation” (OTS) procedure must be available. The self-installation procedure should carry out a series of tests and adjustments applied to the following aspects: operation of the signaling devices, electrically relevant parameters, archway configuration and electromagnetic compatibility with the environment (instructions for each individual step of the sequence should be provided). , in the display of the control unit).
A function that automatically searches for a suitable transmission channel, a channel with minimal influences from possible sources of interference in the installation environment, must be available. The selected transmission channel should be displayed at the end of the procedure.
The device should be able to record the received signal value of the environment and should, if possible, adapt this through automatic fine adjustment in order to achieve the greatest possible immunity to electromagnetic interference (ENA = Environmental Noise Adjustment).
An additional function should be an electromagnetic interference measurement (in percent of the alarm threshold) of the environment displayed in the control unit, which makes it possible to find the best possible position at the location in the event of interference of an electromagnetic nature.
A procedure for detecting and compensating for disturbances caused by mechanical vibrations, for example vibrations in the ground, strong air compression or wind, should be available.
Environmental properties
Storage temperatures: from -31°F (-35°C) to 158°F (+70°C).
Operating temperatures from -4°F (-20°C) to 158°F (+70°C).
Relative storage humidity: from 0 to 95% without condensation
Relative operating humidity: from 0 to 95% without condensation
Electrical Safety, harmlessness and certifications
The WTMD must be carried out by an accredited and independent body (e.g. officially recognized testing center; laboratory etc…), in accordance with the regulations for the protection of safety and security
The health of the worker at risk from electromagnetic fields (exposure area) must be checked and certified.
Electrical Safety: For safety reasons, to avoid any likelihood of electrical hazards, the WTMD must be operated from a rated voltage of not more than 50V AC (Low Current - Also to Earth in the event of a fault current).
The WTMD must use HF (continuous wave) magnetic fields (pulsed fields are not permitted!) to ensure the least possible influence on pacemakers and other health-supporting devices.
The WTMD may not disrupt, influence or even render unusable any medical devices such as hearing aids, pacemakers, defibrillators or neurological stimulators.
